Emfit Epilepsy Tonic-Clonic Seizure Monitor with Bed Sensor Mat
Looking after someone that suffers from epilepsy is never easy, especially during the night when you are asleep. The Emfit Epilepsy Tonic Clonic Seizure Monitor with Bed Sensor Mat is designed to detect tonic-clonic seizures, alerting you of continued abnormal movements over a pre-set length of time. What Does the Emfit Tonic-Clonic Seizure Monitor Do?
The Emfit features a mat that goes under the patient's mattress and a controller unit that plugs into the mat. If the patient has a seizure in bed, the mat will detect this and an alarm will sound in their room. This alarm will then alert a carer to the fact that the patient requires care.
The Emfit Mat can also be used as a bed-leaving alarm. The mat detects "micro-movements" (e.g. those caused by breathing or a person's heart beating) and will sound the alarm if these micro-movements are no longer detected. This helps to prevent wandering, which can be an issue for people with dementia, Alzheimer's or other similar conditions.
How Does the Emfit Epileptic Seizure Monitor Work?
This kit includes two main parts, a sensor mat that is placed beneath the patient's mattress and a controller unit that doubles as an alarm. The sensor can be triggered in two ways:
- When it detects abnormal movements (such as those present in a tonic-clonic seizure)
- When it stops detecting "micro-movements", signifying that the patient has left the bed
Once the bed mat has been triggered, the controller will sound and this will alert you to the fact that an issue has occurred and you can check on the patient.
Who Can Use the Emfit Epilepsy Monitor
This version of the Emfit Epilepsy Seizure Monitor is ideal for both home use and use within a professional care environment:
- Home Care: This kit includes everything that you need to set up an alarm at home, making it great for people who are caring for a child or relative, or live-in carers. The alarm is loud enough to be heard from a different room in most houses or flats.
- Professional Care Environments: As well as use within homes, the Emfit Tonic-Clonic Alarm is also well suited to care homes and hospitals. The alarm controller can be connected to a wide range of nurse call systems – this will require a cable, which is not included with your purchase.

What If I'm Worried About Missing Alarms at Home?
This version of the Emfit Epilepsy Sensor sounds an alarm in the patient's room. For larger houses or houses with thicker walls, there is also a version that includes an additional pager. We would recommend that the model without a pager is suitable for most people needing a system for the home, but if you want additional peace of mind that you won't miss an alert, the Emfit with an additional pager is a fantastic option.
How Can I Connect My Emfit to a Nurse Call System?
It is possible to connect your Emfit to a nurse call system. To do this, you will need a cable that has a RJ12 connector on one end, which will connect to the Emfit, and a connection that is compatible with your nurse call system (this will differ based on the system being used).
Which Patients Is the Emfit Suitable For?
The Emfit Tonic-Clonic Alarm has an adjustable sensitivity that makes it suitable for monitoring a wide range of people, from people weighing less than 15kg to people weighing more than 75kg. As well as this, the length of time needed to trigger an alarm can be adjusted, which helps to cut down on false alerts and allows you to tailor your system to suit your individual needs.
Please note, this product is designed to detect tonic-clonic seizures and may not be suitable for other types of seizure.
The Emfit Seizure Mat should be positioned beneath the patient's mattress
Where Should I Place the Sensor Mat?
The sensor mat should be placed beneath the patient's mattress, as shown below. The mat is designed to be used with a wide range of different mattress styles and thicknesses, including memory foam, pocket-sprung, double thickness, or ultra-thin mattresses. This mat should not be used with air mattresses for health reasons.
